AC installation in Los Angeles: choosing the system and the job

Most Los Angeles AC installations are one of four jobs: replacing central AC on existing ducts, adding central air, installing a heat pump, or fitting a ductless mini-split. The ducts, the furnace and the house decide which. Published 2026 prices start at $4,000–$7,500 for one mini-split zone and run to $25,000 for a large central system.

Find your job in three questions

  1. Does the house have ducts that reach most rooms? No: go to the mini-split or older-home guide. Yes: question 2.
  2. Is there central AC now? Yes: it is an AC replacement. No: it is adding central air. Then question 3.
  3. Is the gas furnace old too? Yes: price a heat pump alongside, since it replaces both and is what the rebates pay for.

Which one fits your house

  • Ducts. Sound ducts make central AC or a ducted heat pump the simpler job. No ducts, or ducts that will fail the leakage test, make a mini-split worth pricing.
  • The furnace. A furnace with years left pairs with a new AC. An old one is the moment to price a heat pump, which heats as well as cools.
  • Where the house sits. On the 1991–2020 NOAA normals, LAX averages 4.8 days a year at 90 °F or above, downtown Los Angeles (USC) 25.6, Burbank airport 53.9 and Woodland Hills (Pierce College) 115.3. Days at 100 °F or above: 0.2, 1.8, 7.2 and 35.6.
  • Electrical service. Older houses on 100-amp panels may need an upgrade for a heat pump. Ask before you compare totals.

Our view: in a Valley house with an old furnace, a heat pump is the quote to get first. On the coast, where cooling runs a few days a year, the cheapest sound option is often right.

How an installation is done

  1. Home visit and sizing. The contractor measures the house and should run a Manual J load calculation instead of sizing by floor area.
  2. Written quote. Model numbers, size, refrigerant, ducts, electrical, permit and warranties as separate lines.
  3. Permit. Pulled by the contractor from LADBS or your city's office.
  4. Install. Old equipment out and refrigerant recovered; new unit, coil or air handler, line set, pad and wiring in.
  5. Tests and sign-off. From 1 January 2026 the CEC's Energy Code Compliance (ECC) program took over field verification from the HERS program, so the third-party rater on a 2026 change-out works under ECC. Then the inspector finals the permit.

What it costs

Published 2026 Los Angeles prices: central AC $6,500–$25,000 across 2 to 5 tons on usable ducts, ducted heat pumps $8,000–$22,000, mini-splits from $4,000–$7,500 for one zone. Ducts, a panel upgrade or a crane add to any of them. The cost guide breaks this down by size and adder.

Any new split AC must meet the Southwest minimums.

California is in DOE's Southwest region. A split AC installed since 1 January 2023 needs 14.3 SEER2 below 45,000 Btu/h (13.8 above), plus an EER2 minimum of 11.7 (11.2 for larger units; 9.8 at 15.2 SEER2 or more). Split heat pumps need 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2.

LADWP and AQMD read on their own pages on 2026-10-20; amounts and status change. Straight ACs earn none of these.

The permit

The California Energy Commission says replacing or altering an HVAC unit needs a permit, the contractor seals and tests the ducts, and a third-party rater verifies the work, including duct leakage.

Which office issues it depends on the property's jurisdiction, not its mailing address. The Los Angeles AC permit guide lists the offices.

Questions

How long does an AC installation take in Los Angeles?

A like-for-like change-out on existing ducts is the shortest job; new ducts, a panel upgrade or a crane lift add time. Ask each contractor for the schedule in writing. The Title 24 verification by a third-party rater comes after the install, before the permit is finalled.

Which system is best for a Los Angeles house?

It depends on the ducts, the furnace and where the house sits. Sound ducts and a newer furnace point to central AC; an old furnace points to a heat pump; no ducts points to a mini-split. Price two of them side by side.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. Replacing or adding HVAC equipment needs a permit, which brings the Title 24 duct and refrigerant tests. In the City of Los Angeles the permit comes from LADBS; other cities and unincorporated areas use their own offices.

What rebates are available for AC installation in Los Angeles?

For heat pumps, not straight ACs: LADWP pays per ton (ducted $1,000–$1,250, ductless $1,500–$2,500 on 2026-10-18), AQMD GO ZERO is closed to new single-family applications pending its Phase 2 relaunch (checked 2026-10-20), and the Burbank, Pasadena and Glendale utilities run their own. The federal 25C credit ended with 2025.

What size AC does my house need?

The size should come from a Manual J load calculation. The LA price guides pair roughly 600 square feet per ton, so an 1,800 sq ft house lands near 3 tons as a starting point, but a Valley house can need more than a coastal one of the same size.

What should an AC installation quote include?

The CSLB license number, matched model numbers with SEER2 and EER2, the size and how it was worked out, the refrigerant, ducts and electrical as separate lines, the permit, the Title 24 tests, warranties and a payment schedule with a deposit of 10 percent or less.

Who performs the installation?

A CSLB-licensed C-20 contractor. This site is an independent publisher: it explains the job and passes your request to licensed contractors, who quote, install and warrant the work.

  1. Tell us about the job. Service, ZIP, property and timing. The form says right away if your ZIP is outside the area.
  2. We check the license first. Requests go only to contractors whose CSLB C-20 license we have matched on the state register. If none covers your ZIP yet, we email you and say so.
  3. Compare what comes back. Line the written quote up against the published ranges and the quote checklist.
