Sources, method and corrections

Last updated .

Every price range and rule on this site names where it came from and the day we read it. This page lists those sources, explains how we gather installation prices, and tells you how to report an error. It applies to the Los Angeles AC installation guide and to the disclosure.

Rules we write by

  • Every cost figure carries its source and the date we read it. We publish no figure of our own until our quote log holds at least twelve dated Los Angeles quotes for that size and system.
  • Where two sources print the same size, the page shows the lowest low and the highest high. A row with one source is labeled least settled.
  • Regulatory statements (licensing, permits, Title 24, efficiency standards, refrigerants, incentives, tax) name the authority. Where we could not confirm the text on the authority's own site, they carry a "verify" mark.
  • The estimator's 600 square feet per ton starting point follows the size bands the LA price guides print. The half-ton shift for coast and Valley is our own rule of thumb and is labeled as ours. Neither replaces a Manual J.
  • No invented people. There is no named reviewer yet. When a C-20-licensed contractor reviews a section, their name and license number appear on it.
  • The last-reviewed date changes only when the content changes.

How the heat figures are computed

The days at 90 °F and 100 °F are NOAA's 1991–2020 annual normals, read from the NCEI data service for five stations: LAX, Long Beach airport, downtown Los Angeles at USC, Burbank airport and Woodland Hills at Pierce College. They are 30-year averages, not a single summer.

Common questions about our sourcing

Why publish other people's price ranges instead of your own?

Because a price we have not gathered is a guess. Until our quote log holds twelve dated Los Angeles quotes for a size and system, we show what named LA HVAC companies have printed, with each page's date.

What does the "verify" mark mean?

That we could not confirm the current wording on the authority's own website, often because the site refused our request. Confirm it with the authority named before you rely on it.

Why is there no named reviewer?

Because we have not recruited one. A byline from a C-20-licensed contractor appears only when a real person has reviewed the section.
