Central air installation in Los Angeles

Adding central air to a Los Angeles house is published at $8,000–$16,000 for 3 tons when the existing furnace ducts can be used. Without usable ducts the job adds $3,500–$8,000 of ductwork, which is where most first-time quotes diverge.

Start with the furnace closet

If you have a furnace with supply registers in most rooms, you are probably in the first or second row. If heat comes from a grille in the floor or wall, you are in the third, and a mini-split belongs in the comparison.

What a first-time central air installation includes

Unlike a replacement, nothing cooling-related exists yet.

The job adds an outdoor condensing unit on a pad, an evaporator coil on top of the furnace or air handler, a refrigerant line set run from outside to the coil, a condensate drain, a dedicated electrical circuit with a disconnect, and a thermostat that controls cooling. Ductwork is the variable.

Can the house's ducts carry cooling?

Many older Los Angeles houses heat with a floor furnace or wall heaters and have no ducts. Others have a forced-air furnace whose ducts were sized for heat. Cooling needs more airflow, so the contractor should check duct size and condition before quoting. The new system triggers a duct leakage test either way.

Under Title 24 Part 6, replacing the condensing unit, air handler or coil is an alteration that triggers duct sealing. Adding more than 25 feet of new duct means the whole system must test at 10 percent leakage or less. Refrigerant charge checks apply to heat pumps everywhere and to ACs in zones 2 and 8–15.

How much cooling does your part of LA need?

Floor area sets the starting point; climate decides how hard the system works. On NOAA's 1991–2020 normals, the days a year at 90 °F or above:

  • Long Beach airport23.3 days
  • Downtown LA (USC)25.6 days

How the job runs

  1. Survey. Load calculation, duct size and condition, furnace compatibility, panel capacity, outdoor unit location.
  2. Written quote. Model numbers, SEER2/EER2, refrigerant, duct work, circuit, line set ($300–$1,500 if long), permit ($250–$800).
  3. Permit from the office for your address.
  4. Install. Coil on the furnace, condenser on its pad, line set, drain, circuit, thermostat; ducts if needed.
  5. Tests and final. Duct leakage and refrigerant checks, third-party verification, inspection.

Central AC or a ducted heat pump on the new system?

If you are adding cooling anyway, the same ducts and air handler can carry a heat pump. The choice turns on the furnace and the rebates.

Central AC on the furnace

  • Keeps the gas furnace for heat
  • Published 3-ton range $8,000–$16,000
  • No LADWP or GO ZERO rebate
  • Right when the furnace is newer

Ducted heat pump

  • Heats and cools; can retire the furnace
  • Published ducted range on the heat pump page
  • LADWP pays $1,000–$1,250/ton by tier; GO ZERO closed for now
  • May need more panel capacity

Where the outdoor unit goes

A first-time install has no existing pad, so the location is a decision. It needs clearance for airflow, a short and protected line-set route to the coil, and distance from bedroom windows, yours and the neighbor's.

Side yards on small LA lots are tight; ask how the clearance will be met, and whether the location needs HOA approval or a setback check with the permit.

The electrical panel

A house that never had AC may not have the panel capacity for a new 240-volt circuit. Older houses on 100-amp service are where the panel upgrade adder appears. Ask the contractor to state the panel's capacity and whether the quote includes the circuit, the disconnect and any electrical permit.

What to ask

  • Will you measure the existing ducts, and what happens if they are too small?
  • Where will the outdoor unit sit, and how long is the line set run?
  • Is the panel upgrade included, excluded or not needed?
  • Would a heat pump cost much more here, given it could replace the furnace too?

The permit path is the same as any AC job: see the permit guide. Compare the answers in the quote tool.

Questions

How much does it cost to add central air to a Los Angeles house?

If the furnace ducts can carry cooling air, a 3-ton system is published at $8,000–$16,000. With no ducts, add new ductwork at $3,500–$8,000; HVACProjectCost prints a full system with all-new ducts at $14,000–$22,000.

Can my furnace ducts be used for central air?

Often, but not always. Cooling moves more air than heating, so ducts sized only for a furnace can be too small, and old ducts must also pass the Title 24 leakage test. The contractor should measure them before quoting.

Does adding central air add value to an LA house?

We have no LA sale-price data to answer that with a number, and we will not guess one. What a buyer can check is the permit: an unpermitted AC system can come up at inspection, so keep the finalled permit and test results.

Is there a rebate for adding central air?

Not for a straight AC. LADWP and the city utilities pay for heat pumps; AQMD GO ZERO is closed to new applications until its Phase 2 portal opens. If you are adding cooling and the furnace is old, pricing a ducted heat pump instead can bring the rebate into play.

How long does it take to add central air?

A house with usable furnace ducts is close to a replacement job. A house that needs new ducts adds attic or crawlspace work, possibly a panel upgrade, and inspections. Ask for the schedule in writing.

Do I need a permit to add central air in Los Angeles?

Yes. A new cooling system needs a mechanical permit, often an electrical permit for the new circuit, and Title 24 tests. The office depends on the address: LADBS in the City of Los Angeles, LA County Public Works in unincorporated areas, or your city.

Will adding central air raise my electric bill much?

It depends on the size, the efficiency and how hot your part of LA gets: Woodland Hills averages 115.3 days a year at 90 °F or above, LAX 4.8. Run your own rate and hours in our heat pump vs AC calculator rather than trusting a generic savings figure.

Is central air or a mini-split cheaper for a house without ducts?

For a few rooms, usually the mini-split: three zones are published at $12,000–$16,500. For a whole house with attic space for ducts, the two land closer together, and central air gives one thermostat and hidden indoor equipment.
