Central air installation cost in Los Angeles
Los Angeles HVAC companies publish central air at $8,000–$16,000 installed for 3 tons on usable ducts in 2026, and $6,500–$12,000 to $11,000–$25,000 from 2 to 5 tons. A house with no ducts adds new ductwork at $3,500–$8,000; HVACProjectCost prints a full system with new ducts at $14,000–$22,000.

Existing ducts or new ducts
| Scenario | Published LA range |
|---|---|
| Duct repair and sealing | $800–$4,500 |
| New or fully replaced ductwork (adder) | $3,500–$8,000 |
| Full system with new ducts (HVACProjectCost) | $14,000–$22,000 |
| Asbestos abatement on old ducts | $2,000–$9,000 |
The Title 24 duct test line
Under Title 24 Part 6, replacing the condensing unit, air handler or coil is an alteration that triggers duct sealing. Adding more than 25 feet of new duct means the whole system must test at 10 percent leakage or less. Refrigerant charge checks apply to heat pumps everywhere and to ACs in zones 2 and 8–15. If the ducts fail, sealing or replacement follows. No LA source prints the rater's fee on its own; the permit and Title 24 paperwork line runs $250–$800. See HERS/ECC testing.

Price a heat pump alongside
Central AC earns no LA utility rebate; a ducted heat pump of the same size can (heat pump cost). If the furnace is old, compare both.
Coast or Valley: why the size, and so the price, moves
Size drives central air prices more than any other line, and in Los Angeles the right size depends on where the house sits. On NOAA's 1991–2020 normals, LAX averages 4.8 days a year at 90 °F or above, downtown (USC) 25.6, Burbank airport 53.9 and Woodland Hills 115.3, with 35.6 days at 100 °F or more. Two houses of the same floor area can land a size apart, which on the published ranges is a step of several thousand dollars.
Ask how the size was chosen
A quote should rest on a Manual J load calculation, not a square-foot rule. Our sizing preparation sheet lists what to have ready, and what size AC an LA home needs explains the inputs.

How these ranges are built, and what they are not
- Only published Los Angeles figures. Each range is what a named LA HVAC company or cost publisher printed, with the date on the page and the date we read it.
- No interpolation. If no source prints a size or a line, the table says "no published figure" or leaves the size out; we do not fill gaps from national averages.
- Widest honest band. Where two sources print the same size, the range runs from the lowest low to the highest high.
- Not our quote index. This site's own figures need at least 12 dated LA quotes per cell before they publish; that dataset is still being collected.
Use the ranges to check quotes, not to replace them
Itemized written quotes from licensed C-20 contractors are the only real price. Put them side by side with the quote comparison tool and confirm the license with the CSLB check.

Questions
How much does central air cost in Los Angeles?
$8,000–$16,000 for 3 tons on usable ducts, on published 2026 LA ranges.
What if my house has no ducts?
Add new ductwork at $3,500–$8,000, or compare ductless mini-splits.
Is there a rebate for central air?
Not for a cooling-only AC in the LA programs we track; heat pumps earn them.
Is sales tax included in these prices?
California treats an installed air-conditioning unit or furnace as a fixture, so sales tax applies to its price; ducts are materials, taxed on the contractor's cost; installation labor is not taxed. Ask whether a quote includes it.
How much deposit should I pay?
CSLB cautions that a down payment should not exceed 10 percent of the contract price, and later payments should not run ahead of the work done or materials delivered.

- Tell us about the job. Service, ZIP, property and timing. The form says right away if your ZIP is outside the area.
- We check the license first. Requests go only to contractors whose CSLB C-20 license we have matched on the state register. If none covers your ZIP yet, we email you and say so.
- Compare what comes back. Line the written quote up against the published ranges and the quote checklist.
