AC installation cost in Los Angeles, 2026
Los Angeles HVAC companies published a 3-ton central AC at $8,000–$16,000 installed in 2026, and $6,500–$25,000 across 2 to 5 tons on ducts that can be reused. A ducted heat pump is published at $8,000–$22,000 and a one-zone mini-split at $4,000–$7,500. New ducts, a panel upgrade or a crane lift come on top.

AC installation cost at a glance
Read this first
These are published ranges for a stated scope, not quotes and not our prices. The number that matters is the written quote for your house, checked line by line against the quote checklist.
What a published installation price includes, and what it leaves out
A published "installed" range from an LA HVAC company usually means: the outdoor unit and matching indoor coil or air handler, the refrigerant line set and pad, connecting to existing ducts and wiring, removal of the old equipment, and start-up.
That is the typical scope, not a promise; check what your quote lists rather than assuming it.
What the headline range usually does not include, unless the quote lists it:
- Duct repair, sealing to pass the Title 24 leakage test, or new ducts.
- An electrical panel upgrade or a new circuit, common when a heat pump replaces a gas furnace.
- A crane lift to a roof or over a building.
- Asbestos abatement on old duct wrap, which Reliable Heating and Air lists as a separate adder.
- The permit and the third-party Title 24 verification, which some quotes fold in and some bill separately.
Sales tax applies to the AC unit as a fixture and to ducts as the contractor's materials; installation labor is not taxed (CDTFA, Sales and Use Tax Regulation 1521, Appendices A and B, CDTFA).
Central AC and ducted heat pump cost by tonnage
Ducted systems are priced by size in tons. The guides that print sizes pair roughly 600 square feet with each ton, but the right size comes from a Manual J load calculation, not floor area alone.
A Woodland Hills house sees about 115 days a year at 90 °F or above against about 5 at LAX (NOAA normals), so the same floor area can need different equipment.
| Size | Central AC | Ducted heat pump | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 ton ~1,200 sq ft | $6,500–$12,000 | $9,000–$11,500 | Reliable H&A, Cold Cloud, E & A Mechanical |
| 2.5 ton ~1,500 sq ft | $7,000–$13,500 | not printed | Reliable H&A, Cold Cloud |
| 3 ton ~1,800 sq ft | $8,000–$16,000 | $12,000–$15,000 | Reliable H&A, Cold Cloud, E & A Mechanical |
| 3.5 ton ~2,100 sq ft | $11,000–$17,500 | not printed | Reliable H&A; AC least settled |
| 4 ton ~2,400 sq ft | $9,500–$19,000 | $14,500–$18,000 | Reliable H&A, Cold Cloud, E & A Mechanical |
| 5 ton ~3,000 sq ft | $11,000–$25,000 | $17,000–$22,000 | Reliable H&A, Cold Cloud, E & A Mechanical |
Where two sources print the same size, the row shows the lowest low and the highest high.
Heat pump figures by size come from one company, so they are the least settled numbers on this page. HVACProjectCost prints an all-sizes heat pump band of $9,000–$17,000. Efficiency drives part of the spread: Cold Cloud adds $2,500–$5,000 for a unit above 17 SEER2. Federal minimums for a new split AC in California are explained on HyreHVAC's SEER2 page.
Coast or Valley: why the same house can need a different system
Los Angeles has several climates in one county. NOAA's 30-year normals show how far apart they are, and heat days drive both the size a load calculation lands on and how hard the system works.
| Station | Days ≥ 90 °F | Days ≥ 100 °F | Cooling degree days |
|---|---|---|---|
| LAX | 4.8 | 0.2 | 720 |
| Long Beach airport | 23.3 | 1.9 | 1,166 |
| Downtown LA (USC) | 25.6 | 1.8 | 1,296 |
| Burbank airport | 53.9 | 7.2 | 1,481 |
| Woodland Hills | 115.3 | 35.6 | 1,819 |
What it means for the quote
A Valley or inland house is more likely to justify a larger or variable-speed system; a coastal house may run its AC only a few weeks a year, where a smaller system or a mini-split for the hot rooms can be the better buy. Either way the size should come from a load calculation, not the map.
Ductless mini-split cost by zone
A mini-split is priced by the number of indoor heads (zones), not tons. It is the usual answer for Craftsman and Spanish-style houses with no ducts, condos, ADUs and room additions.
| Zones | Published range | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| 1 zone | $4,000–$7,500 | E & A Mechanical, HVACProjectCost |
| 2 zones | $9,000–$12,500 | E & A Mechanical; least settled |
| 3 zones | $12,000–$16,500 | E & A Mechanical; least settled |
| 4 zones | $15,000–$20,000 | E & A Mechanical; least settled |
HVACProjectCost prints multi-zone systems at $10,000–$18,000. The line-set length and where the outdoor unit can legally sit (HOA rules, setbacks, noise) move the price most.
Replacing an AC versus installing central air for the first time
Replacement swaps the condenser and coil, and sometimes the furnace or air handler, on ducts that already exist. The tonnage table above is that job. Affordable Heating and Air prints a full-system replacement at $9,000–$22,000, with most jobs at $11,000–$13,000.
First-time central air in a house that has a furnace but no cooling may reuse the furnace ducts if they are large and sound enough.
A house with wall heaters or radiators has no ducts at all, so the cost becomes equipment plus new ductwork: published at $3,500–$8,000 for the ducts alone, and $14,000–$22,000 for a full system with all-new ducts.
Pricing a ducted system against a multi-zone mini-split is worth it when there are no ducts. The mini-split avoids the attic or crawlspace duct run; the ducted system gives one thermostat and hidden equipment.
What adds to an AC installation quote
| Permit and Title 24 paperwork Reliable H&A, Cold Cloud | +$250–$800 |
| Line set, pad or a long refrigerant run Reliable H&A, E & A Mechanical | +$300–$1,500 |
| Duct repair and sealing Reliable H&A, Cold Cloud, E & A Mechanical | +$800–$4,500 |
| New or fully replaced ductwork Reliable H&A, Cold Cloud, HVACProjectCost | +$3,500–$8,000 |
| Electrical panel, 100 A to 200 A Reliable H&A, Cold Cloud, E & A Mechanical, HVACProjectCost | +$2,000–$7,500 |
| Crane lift to a roof or over a building HVACProjectCost | +$800–$2,000 |
| Asbestos abatement on old ducts Reliable H&A | +$2,000–$9,000 |
Two adders show up most in LA: duct work, because a new condenser triggers Title 24 duct sealing and testing (duct repair is published at $800–$4,500), and the electrical panel ($2,000–$7,500 for 100 A to 200 A), because older houses often run on 100 amps.
The permit itself is the smallest line. What the permit brings, and which office issues it, is on the Los Angeles AC permit guide.

Estimate a price band for your house
The estimator below uses the same published ranges. It gives a band to check a quote against, not a quote.
Size and price band estimator
Enter the conditioned floor area and where the house sits. You get a size band and the published LA price range for it. It checks a quote; it is not one, and it is no substitute for the Manual J the contractor should run.
Coast means Santa Monica or Long Beach; Valley means the San Fernando or San Gabriel valleys. Sources and dates are in the table above. The 600 sq ft per ton start follows the size bands those guides print; the coast and Valley half-ton shift is our own rule of thumb.
Your band
Ask for the Manual J result; it should land near this.
Published 2026 figures from named LA companies, not quotes from us. A quote outside the band is not wrong; it should explain why.

We read the installation price pages of Los Angeles-area HVAC companies and one cost publisher, recorded the date each page carried and the date we read it, and kept only figures stated for Los Angeles.
A size row shows the lowest low and highest high across the sources that print that size. Single-source rows are labelled least settled. We do not interpolate from national figures.

Why other cost sites show different numbers
Lead-marketplace "averages" for Los Angeles are modelled across many project sizes and scopes, and usually leave out the permit, duct sealing and panel work an LA change-out often needs. We do not reprint those averages, because nobody can tell you what job they describe.
Questions about AC installation cost in Los Angeles
How much does a 3-ton AC installation cost in Los Angeles?
LA HVAC companies published a 3-ton central AC at $8,000–$16,000 installed in 2026, on ducts that can be reused. That is 2 sources; the low end assumes a straight swap, the high end a higher-efficiency unit or harder access.
Why do Los Angeles AC quotes differ by thousands of dollars?
Mostly because they price different jobs. One quote may reuse the ducts and skip the panel; another replaces the ducts, upgrades to 200 amps and includes the permit and Title 24 tests. Compare scope line by line before you compare totals.
Does the permit cost much?
Two LA sources print permit and Title 24 paperwork at $250–$800. It is small next to the equipment, but a quote that leaves it out is either unpermitted work or an extra charge later.
Is adding central air to a house without ducts much more expensive?
Yes. A first-time install adds ductwork: published at $3,500–$8,000 for new or fully replaced ducts, and HVACProjectCost prints a full system with all-new ducts at $14,000–$22,000. A ductless mini-split, from $4,000–$7,500 for one zone, is often the cheaper comparison.
Are these your prices?
No. Every range on this page is a figure a named Los Angeles HVAC company or cost publisher printed, with the date we read it. We will publish our own figure only once we hold at least twelve dated Los Angeles quotes for that size and system.
Does a heat pump cost more than central AC in Los Angeles?
Usually somewhat more for the equipment: LA sources publish a ducted heat pump at $8,000–$22,000 against $6,500–$25,000 for central AC across sizes. A heat pump also replaces the gas furnace, and it is the system the LADWP, Burbank, Pasadena and Glendale rebates pay on.
Should I replace the furnace and AC at the same time?
If the furnace is old, pricing both together usually costs less than two separate jobs, because the coil, line set and permit are handled once. It is also the moment to price a heat pump instead of an AC plus a new furnace.
Why do national cost sites show lower Los Angeles averages?
Their averages are modelled from projects of every size and scope, often without permits, duct work or panel upgrades. The ranges on this page are what named LA companies print for a stated scope. Compare like with like before you judge a quote.
Can I combine a utility rebate with other incentives?
Sometimes. Each program sets its own stacking rules, and the federal 25C credit no longer applies to 2026 installs. Read the program terms, or ask the utility, before you subtract more than one incentive.
Can I still get a tax credit on a new AC or heat pump?
The federal 25C credit applied to qualifying equipment placed in service before 31 December 2025. A system installed in 2026 does not qualify. LADWP and the Burbank and Pasadena city utilities run their own heat pump rebates; check the current terms before you count on one.
