What the quote should name

  • Number of heads and capacity of each.
  • Outdoor unit location and line-set length.
  • Circuit and panel work.
  • SEER2/HSPF2 of the matched system for the rebate.
  • Permit and who files the rebate.

Coast or Valley: why the size, and so the price, moves

Size drives mini-split prices more than any other line, and in Los Angeles the right size depends on where the house sits. On NOAA's 1991–2020 normals, LAX averages 4.8 days a year at 90 °F or above, downtown (USC) 25.6, Burbank airport 53.9 and Woodland Hills 115.3, with 35.6 days at 100 °F or more. Two houses of the same floor area can land a size apart, which on the published ranges is a step of several thousand dollars.

Ask how the size was chosen

A quote should rest on a Manual J load calculation, not a square-foot rule. Our sizing preparation sheet lists what to have ready, and what size AC an LA home needs explains the inputs.

NOAA NCEI, U.S. Climate Normals 1991–2020, annual/seasonal (stations USW00023174, USW00093134, USW00023152, USC00049785), retrieved 2026-09-29.

How these ranges are built, and what they are not

  1. Only published Los Angeles figures. Each range is what a named LA HVAC company or cost publisher printed, with the date on the page and the date we read it.
  2. No interpolation. If no source prints a size or a line, the table says "no published figure" or leaves the size out; we do not fill gaps from national averages.
  3. Widest honest band. Where two sources print the same size, the range runs from the lowest low to the highest high.
  4. Not our quote index. This site's own figures need at least 12 dated LA quotes per cell before they publish; that dataset is still being collected.

Use the ranges to check quotes, not to replace them

Itemized written quotes from licensed C-20 contractors are the only real price. Put them side by side with the quote comparison tool and confirm the license with the CSLB check.

Questions

How much is a one-zone mini-split in LA?

$4,000–$7,500 installed on published 2026 LA ranges.

Does LADWP rebate mini-splits?

Yes, qualifying ductless heat pumps earn $1,500–$2,500 per ton, except in ADUs and new construction.

Does a mini-split need a permit?

Yes: mechanical, and usually electrical for the new circuit.

Is sales tax included in these prices?

California treats an installed air-conditioning unit or furnace as a fixture, so sales tax applies to its price; ducts are materials, taxed on the contractor's cost; installation labor is not taxed. Ask whether a quote includes it.

How much deposit should I pay?

CSLB cautions that a down payment should not exceed 10 percent of the contract price, and later payments should not run ahead of the work done or materials delivered.

Get a quote to check against these numbers

  1. Tell us about the job. Service, ZIP, property and timing. The form says right away if your ZIP is outside the area.
  2. We check the license first. Requests go only to contractors whose CSLB C-20 license we have matched on the state register. If none covers your ZIP yet, we email you and say so.
  3. Compare what comes back. Line the written quote up against the published ranges and the quote checklist.

No cost and no obligation. We are a publisher, not a contractor; contractors pay us for introductions. How that works.
